Finding the perfect second home, or one to enjoy for the retirement years, can be a challenge. There are many questions centering on where to live, the price range, the style of home, the overall community, --plus, what are the lifestyle options and amenities?

For Jackie and Bill McMahon, the choice was simple – Dataw Island. The couple moved to Dataw Island from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. five years ago and considering they are avid golfers, the community was a perfect fit. They knew they were home as soon as they arrived on the island for a visit.

“Both of the golf courses here are fantastic,” says Jackie. “The Cotton Dike course is so beautiful, so even if you are not playing well you have to love the scenery. Morgan River is also a great course and I love the beautiful water hole on # No.14. Both courses provide a challenge, are visually pleasing and are always in great condition year-round.”

Recently, Jackie scored an eagle on the par 5, 11th hole on the Morgan River course. The memorable moment came during the Ringers Tournament, a women’s competition, so it made the achievement that much sweeter. Her best score is a 91, and aside from the recent eagle on the Morgan River course, Jackie also cards an occasional birdie. But whether playing with her husband, or with a group of friends, playing golf at Dataw Island is a favorite activity for the McMahons'.

Jackie describes the perfect day at Dataw Island: “Get up and it’s a beautiful day. Play 18 holes of golf and have a fantastic score. Then, lunch with friends and afterward, take the dog for a walk. If I am ambitious, I may go to our great community center for a workout. Lastly, the day is topped off with friends over dinner, or at someone’s house for a party.”

For the McMahons', Dataw Island sold itself. The Lowcountry lifestyle, magnificent scenery, variety of amenities and proximity to Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston all played into their decision to call Dataw Island “home.” But overall, the biggest selling point for living here is the people that comprise what’s known as the “Island of Friends.”

“Everyone here is so friendly,” said Jackie. “Most people who came here left a lot of good friends, but you make even more lifetime friends here at Dataw Island. They are always here when you need help with something. The golf courses and the Dataw Island Club are truly what makes living here so special whether you are an avid golfer like we are, or a non-golfer.”
