Golfing on Dataw -
James Bond Style

This spring, the Dataw Island Club’s mixed member guest tournament will be asking for their martinis to be shaken, not stirred. The reason? This year’s tournament has an intriguing theme, “007 in 009.”

Taking place March 26-28, this year’s event will be three days of golf, cocktails and fellowship for members and their guests.

The festivities begin March 26 at 9 a.m. with a practice round, registration and a putting contest. In the evening, everyone will be able to take part in cocktails and heavy Hors d’oeurves at the Martini and Member Signature Bar. The “secret agent” fun really kicks off the following morning as teams will converge on the clubhouse for breakfast and team photos, followed by a noon shotgun start to the tournament. This round will include several side games, including: best ball man and woman shots on the front nine; and on the back nine, two best balls of the foursome.

On the closing day of the tournament, there will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start with the front nine being in the shamble format and the back nine being played alternate shot. To commemorate the weekend, the tournament will close out with cocktails at 6:15 p.m. At “007” there will be a formal dinner, tournament awards recognition and dancing. For this event, jackets are required and “Bond” attire is welcome.

12,000 Years of Dataw History

One of the many things that set Dataw Island apart from other communities is its rich and colorful history and the resident-driven commitment to cherish and preserve it.

From its discovery by the Spanish in 1514, history has been enamored with Dataw Island’s allure. The Spanish, French and English battled for the land that is Dataw Island for more than 200 years prior to the Revolutionary War. In the plantation age, South Carolina’s sea islands became the “Newport of the South” and the storied estates built with the wealth of indigo and sea island cotton dotted the landscape. These grand manors, home to a privileged lifestyle, defined Dataw until the Civil War heralded the end of an era. But Dataw still hummed with life as a quiet hunting preserve for the next century.

Today, the place where fertile soil hosted indigo and cotton on antebellum plantations, is still home to rich experiences. History lives in the foundations of the 18th century structures made of local sand, lime, water and oyster shells that still stand. And history’s love affair with the land still burns strong.

A group of Dataw Island residents has a love affair of their own – with the history of the island. Formed with the mission of preserving and fostering the rich plantation history of Dataw Island, the Dataw Historic Foundation is led by a passionate group of residents dedicated to incorporating this unique history into the complete Dataw Island lifestyle. With future projects including continued work on preserving the Tabby Ruins and creating a museum to house all of Dataw’s artifacts and records from the plantation era, the Foundation is writing a history of its own as it preserves Dataw Island’s.

Before breaking ground to build Dataw in 1983, an archaeological and anthropological exploration of the Island was commissioned. In this exploration, artifacts dating back more than 12,000 years were found.

Recently the Dataw Island Club, Dataw Island Owners Association and Dataw Historic Foundation joined forces to plan and fund a unique, informative historic display at the Dataw Island Welcome Center. When complete, the display will trace the history of Dataw Island from Paleolithic times through the Pre-Colonial and Antebellum Plantation eras through using these unique artifacts that were discovered in the 1983 dig.

The display is being created by The History Workshop and will feature artifacts, historic timelines, and interpretative panels on the Island’s rich history. The exhibit is expected to be opened to the public by late Summer 2009.
