It's that time of year when the warm temperatures and sunshine call to pack up for a day at the beach. Fortunately, Hunting Island State Park is not far from Dataw Island. With opportunities to explore and relax, Hunting Island is a popular gem in the South Carolina State Park System.
The true historic value at Hunting Island stands 132 feet above the ground. The Hunting Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 but destroyed by Confederates at the start of the Civil War. In 1875, it was rebuilt and remained in service until 1933. It is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that is open to the public, and the view from the top is worth every step.
The Nature & Visitor Center offers opportunities to learn more about the local flora and fauna of the island. Alligators, egrets, herons, bald eagles, crabs and loggerhead turtles all share this lively habitat. The marsh boardwalk offers a great opportunity to see the various inhabitants of the island. A pair of binoculars is a must!
Fishing is a top activity at Hunting Island. Whether fishing from the lagoon, the surf or from the fishing pier which reaches 1,120 feet into Fripp Inlet, the experience is unforgettable.
Of course, after all the adventure, pull out the beach chair and take in the sounds and views of the Atlantic Ocean.
