Featured Community Event - Penn Center Celebrates 27th Annual Heritage Days Celebration |
Those not familiar with the area surrounding Dataw Island might not be aware of the rich culture and heritage we have just minutes away. Dataw Island is located just off of St. Helena Island, which is home to what many anthropologists and sociologists consider the richest concentration of Negro culture in the United States.
The Penn Center was the site of one of the country's first schools for formerly enslaved people and is now host to a weekend of celebrating the rich Gullah culture of the Sea Islands.

Penn Center 's Heritage Days showcases the Gullah culture through music, food, basketry, story telling, net-making, hair braiding and bateau-making that are all part of a cultural legacy rooted in West Africa. Traditional Gullah cuisine can be enjoyed, such as okra gumbo, Gullah rice (a tangy mix of rice, tomato, sausage, shrimp, green peppers, and onions) and seafood gumbo.
Check out this month's Lowcountry Recipe for a taste of the Gullah culture!

Featured Dataw Event - Tennis for the Turkeys Round Robin
Join us for the classic Thanksgiving morning tennis gathering to savor the last look at our svelte physique before the turkey, giblets & gravy, dressing, corn muffins, pumpkin and pecan pies, as well as other familial favorites totally dismantle our digestive systems to the point of “no return” (get it???). Anyway, all are welcome including family and friends but only the first 32 plus subs will have the pleasure of court assignments. The rest will be relegated to armchair cluckers, unless, of course, you would rather be back helping in the kitchen. The fun begins at 9:00 am and goes until 11:00 when the first dinner bells begin their call.
- Donna McKenna, Director of Tennis
